History: Though Nick’s family never had much money, their home was always a loving one; his mother did her best to make him as happy as they could, encouraging him as much as possible to follow his aspirations - whatever those around him may have thought about him and his species.

And, for the early years of Nick’s life, they were pretty successful; Nick was an optimistic, friendly child, and despite foxes’ reputation for being untrustworthy and potentially dangerous, he was set on proving the perceptions of those around them to be wrong. When he was nine years old, he decided to join the Junior Ranger Scouts - something that would make him the first predator in their town’s branch of the organization. His mother saved up enough money to get him a uniform, determined to help him fit in as much as possible, and he went to his first meeting in high spirits.

That was about when things went wrong. Though the other troop members seemed friendly and open to Nick’s joining at first, the whole thing rapidly turned out to be an extremely mean-spirited prank. The kids pushed Nick down and put a muzzle on him, saying that they could never trust a fox to hang around them otherwise. Nick ran from the building, hiding outside by the stairs to get the muzzle off. Unsurprisingly, that incident ended up being a major turning point in Nick’s view of himself and of the world in general.

From then on, Nick acted under the assumption that, as he couldn’t seem to do anything to change other mammals’ perception of him, he would just have to accept what he was expected to be. It was when he was only twelve years old that he started working as a scammer, gradually working out the intricacies and loopholes of the city’s laws so as to ensure that, even if someone caught onto his scams, they couldn’t actually take any legal action against him.

For the next twenty years, Nick ran a pretty successful scamming business, always managing to make at least enough money to get by - and often significantly more - and always dodging around whatever trouble he ran into… though, unsurprisingly, he did end up making a couple enemies, most notably the shrew crime boss Mr. Big. All that eventually changed, though, when he ran into Judy Hopps, a new recruit to Zootopia’s police and the first rabbit on the force.

At first, when Judy was caught up in one of his schemes but failed to corner him legally, he saw her as little more than another bright-eyed, overly optimistic new cop who would be beaten down by the reality of the city soon enough. Before long, though, Nick found himself dragged into something in turn when Judy connected him to a recent missing mammal case. Though he had no interest in helping, she left him with little choice when she got recorded evidence that, since his source of income was so disconnected from the government anyway, he had gotten away with avoiding paying income taxes for the past twenty years. Nick agreed to help Judy with the case with the condition that he would be allowed to erase the evidence of his ongoing tax evasion once it was solved.

After a bit of investigation, a run-in with the aforementioned mafia boss, and a lot of Nick being intentionally difficult, Nick finally started to warm up to Judy after she saved his life - and he came to realize, watching the chief of police’s treatment of her, that they may have had more in common than he realized, and he suddenly became a lot more invested in helping her solve the case and prove herself. With assistance from the city’s assistant mayor, Bellwether, hey finally tracked down the location of the missing mammals, all predators who seemed to have lost their minds out of nowhere. The mayor, Lionheart, had been keeping them all trapped in a secret facility in order to protect his own reputation, as a predator himself, and so he was arrested - but, with no cause or cure found for the sudden shift in behavior, the missing mammals were taken into custody by the police for the time being.

The already-only-partial victory was soured further when, in a subsequent press conference, Judy suggested that the victims’ sudden aggression may have been connected to their ‘nature’ as predators. Horrified and betrayed, Nick, previously having been considering actually applying to be a police officer, stormed out of the station. He didn’t see Judy at all in the ensuing weeks, as more predators seemed to lose their minds and panic threatened to spread in the city.

When Judy did track him down again, driving all the way back from her hometown in her parents’ produce truck, it was with the news that she had more information on the case - and had been wrong about the cause, now suspecting it to have been a conscious effort by an unknown party to create suspicion toward predators by poisoning them with toxic flowers called nighthowlers that were known by some to cause aggressive behavior. Nick heard her out and, in the end, forgave her, agreeing to help her prove the actual cause and clear away the suspicion toward predators in the city.

They managed to track down a lab, set up inside an old train car, which was being used to produce pellets containing concentrated nighthowler poison. Despite their best efforts, they failed to get the car to the station, and most of the evidence was destroyed - but Nick did manage to grab a case containing a sample of the poison and the gun that had been used to target the predators. They tried to cut through a museum to get to the police department faster, but were stopped along the way by Bellwether… who Judy rapidly realized to be heavily involved in the conspiracy against the predators.
With Bellwether and three burly rams after them, Nick and Judy tried to flee through the natural history museum, but were effectively cornered when Judy injured her leg and Nick refused to leave her behind. Thinking quickly, they tried to distract Bellwether and then sneak away, swapping out the poison pellets in the gun for blueberries from Judy’s truck, just in case she did get hold of the case of evidence… which turned out to be a good plan, as Bellwether and her cronies managed to trap them both in a diorama, and promptly shot Nick with what she assumed to be nighthowler poison before calling the police to report an attack.

While Bellwether explained her plan to discredit the predators in the city and give prey more power, Nick pretended to have ‘gone savage’ like the others, stalling for time as the police got closer and Judy secretly recorded Bellwether’s incriminating monologue… though he and Judy did drop the act soon enough to gloat a bit before Bellwether was arrested.

With the case solved, the growing suspicion toward predators clearing up, and a cure for the nighthowler poison finally found, things started to move a little more toward normalcy - with the change that Nick did finally apply to the police force, and, after some training to be less of a wimp, was hired as the first fox to work for the police department.

Personality: Nick is someone who is accustomed to tailoring his image to give those around him a particular idea of who and what he is. Most of the time, that ‘who’ is someone who doesn’t care what others think, who is totally unaffected by any doubts or accusations or insults from those around him; usually, he’ll just shake them all off with a snide remark. In fact, he tends to handle most things with snide remarks; it’s just kind of his default method of interacting with those around him, to the point that it can be difficult to tell sometimes whether he’s being genuine or not.

He also has a petty streak a mile wide. If he dislikes someone or is annoyed with them (and feels like he can get away with it), he will pretty much do whatever he can to make things incredibly difficult for them, from actually impeding whatever they’re doing (like, say, making a point of slowing down the already-slow process of running a license plate) to just… continuing to be rude and annoying at every opportunity. Again, though, that’s not to say that he won’t still be annoying if he does like someone; he just won’t be as actively inconvenient about it.

Of course, despite what he may want those around him to believe, Nick does actually experience emotions other than smugness. It’s usually only when he’s either under a good bit of stress or experiences a rare moment of honesty that he’s likely to display them, of course - and there are very few people who he’s inclined to let see him showing anything resembling vulnerability (with the exception of the aforementioned, you know, situations of extreme stress). It’s only likely to really happen if he feels that whoever he’s talking to is likely to actually understand - such as the first time he opens up to Judy, explaining his resignation to the way he’s seen by those around him. Even then, it doesn’t take him long to jump back to his usual deflection of the actual topic at hand.

In addition, while Nick generally acts extremely confident in his ability to maintain the upper hand in most situations - and, in most cases, really is pretty confident - if he does realize that he’s at a disadvantage he isn’t very good at hiding his doubts. Nick has a tendency to crack under pressure, his cool facade disappearing rapidly - as shown when Judy cornered him with evidence of his tax evasion, and when he found himself caught by Mr. Big’s henchmen.

Finally, when Nick does come to feel genuinely attached to someone, it takes a lot for him to change his mind. Though he turned away from Judy after her disastrous speech at the press conference, he was more betrayed than anything by her blaming the attacks on the predators’ respective species - and he readily agreed to help her again when she owned up to her mistake. Afterward, he seemed more loyal than ever, refusing to leave her side when she was injured in the museum.

Abilities/Skills: Nick’s senses of smell and hearing are significantly stronger than a human’s, as is his night vision. He’s also pretty practiced at improvised acting and making plans quickly, and his police training means he does have some fairly basic combat and pursuit abilities.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Good at coming up with plans quickly and carrying them out, as well as ‘playing a part’ if necessary.
Quick-moving and agile
Good at reading people and tailoring his behavior accordingly when necessary

Weaknesses:
Not great at handling high pressure situations; tends to freeze up or panic if he feels he doesn’t have the upper hand
Often extremely overconfident, particularly when it comes to situations that he thinks he could potentially just talk his way out of

Items: Button-up shirt, necktie, pants, sunglasses, and ten dollars in his pocket.

SAMPLES
Network Sample: [Is that an actual red fox looking at the camera? IT SURE IS, and he looks… a little concerned.]

RIGHT, so, hey there… crewmates, I guess. Gotta admit, being kidnapped onto a spaceship wasn’t really on my to-do list, but here we are…

Anyway, I gotta ask something of you guys, and it would be great if you didn’t take this offensively, because, believe it or not, I absolutely don’t mean it that way. [It may be hard to tell if he’s being genuine about that or not, but okay.]

Specifically… so, humans, assuming I’m… pronouncing that correctly. What are you? I mean, to be completely honest - you don’t look much like any mammals I’ve ever seen, and apparently you’re not actually bald sloths.

My apologies, by the way, to any of you who considers that insulting, but I assure you - some of my best friends are sloths, it’s not meant as an insult.

But - back to the point. It would be great to know, again, what you actually are. You know, family-wise. If anyone wants to get back to me on this, and actually be helpful about it, it would be greatly appreciated!
